What Is a Nuru Massage? How It Works and What It Costs

What the gel actually is

Nuru gel is made from nori seaweed. It is colourless, odourless, tasteless and far thicker and more slippery than massage oil, which is the entire point: it lets one body glide over another with almost no friction.

It washes off with water, it does not stain, and it is not oil based, so it will not degrade a condom the way an oil massage can. That last detail matters more than it sounds.

How a session actually goes

Usually a shower first, for both of you. The gel is warmed, because cold gel on bare skin is unpleasant and everybody learns that once. Then it is applied generously to both of you.

Most of it happens on a waterproof mat rather than a massage table, because a table is the wrong shape for this and gets slippery in ways that are genuinely unsafe. The massage itself is done with her forearms, chest, stomach, thighs and back, not her hands.

Expect it to take longer than a conventional massage. An hour is the shortest that makes sense once you account for the shower at each end.

Nuru, tantric and erotic massage are not the same

These three get used interchangeably by people advertising them, which helps nobody:

• Nuru: defined by the technique. Body-to-body, on a mat, with nuru gel. Everything else varies.
• Tantric: defined by the approach. Slow, breath-led, drawn from tantra, and focused on building rather than finishing. Usually done with hands and oil.
• Erotic massage: the broad umbrella term. It says the massage is sensual and says nothing more precise than that.

If you have a specific one in mind, use its name when you call. Asking for “a massage” will get you whichever the companion usually offers.

What it costs in London

Nuru is normally booked as part of an hour or ninety minutes with a companion who offers it, at her usual rate, rather than priced as a standalone treatment. On this site those rates start around £200 an hour and run to £600 in the central areas.

Where it does appear as an extra it is typically £50 on top, which covers the gel, the mat and the setup. Genuine nuru gel is not cheap and a session gets through a lot of it.

A word on the low end: if somewhere is advertising nuru at a price well below the market, it is usually oil rather than nuru gel, on a table rather than a mat. That is a normal massage described optimistically.

Practical things nobody mentions

• Shower before and after. Not optional, and she will expect it.
• It goes everywhere. This is why it happens on a mat in a room set up for it. Outcall nuru in a hotel is often declined for exactly this reason, so ask rather than assume.
• Say if you have a seaweed or iodine allergy. Nori is seaweed. This is rare but it is worth thirty seconds on the phone.
• Take your watch off. Obvious in hindsight.
